What Are Home Adaptations?
Home adaptations modify your property to make it safer, more accessible, and more comfortable for people with disabilities, mobility impairments, or age-related conditions. At JBW Construction, we deliver a complete range of adaptations from minor modifications to major structural alterations.
We work with occupational therapists, Chesterfield Borough Council's DFG team, and housing associations to deliver adaptations that meet assessed needs. Whether you're self-funding or applying for a Disabled Facilities Grant, we provide the professional building service that ensures work is completed to the required standard.
Our experience with home adaptations means we understand the sensitive nature of this work. We're working in occupied homes with vulnerable residents, and we approach every project with the care, respect, and minimal disruption that families need.
Why Professional Adaptation Matters
Poorly installed adaptations can be worse than no adaptation at all. A level-access shower without proper tanking and drainage causes water damage. Ramps built at incorrect gradients are unusable or dangerous. Grab rails fixed to unsupported plasterboard pull away under load.
The consequence isn't just inconvenience — it's risk of serious injury to vulnerable people. A fall caused by a poorly installed grab rail or a slip on an incorrectly graded ramp can have life-changing consequences for elderly or disabled residents.
Additionally, Disabled Facilities Grant funded works require professional building standards and must pass council inspection. Work that doesn't meet these standards must be redone at the homeowner's expense, causing additional stress and delay for people who need adaptations urgently.

Home Adaptation Services in Detail
Level-Access Showers & Wet Rooms
The most common adaptation we install. We remove baths and create step-free shower areas with non-slip flooring, grab rails, fold-down shower seats, and thermostatically controlled mixer valves. Full tanking prevents water damage, and adequate drainage ensures safe, reliable use.
Ramps & External Access
We construct permanent concrete or brick ramps to correct gradients (1:12 maximum for wheelchair access), with handrails, non-slip surfaces, and proper drainage. We also install external handrails, regrade pathways, and widen external doorways.
Wider Doorways & Through-Floor Access
Standard doorways are often too narrow for wheelchair users. We widen openings with proper structural support, install wider door sets, and create level thresholds. For multi-storey access, we prepare structures for through-floor lifts and stairlifts.
Ground-Floor Bedroom & Bathroom
When stairs become impassable, we convert ground-floor rooms into bedrooms and install downstairs bathroom facilities. This often involves plumbing rerouting, drainage connections, and layout changes to create a self-contained ground-floor living arrangement.
Kitchen Adaptations
We lower worktops, install pull-out shelving at accessible heights, reposition appliances for wheelchair access, and create knee space under work surfaces. Lever taps, pull-out spray hoses, and accessible storage solutions complete the adaptation.
